The Night of Music in Gatchina. 8 July 2017

The Night of Music Festival is one of Russia's most spectacular and memorable events held in the open air. The stage is set on the smooth surface of the White Lake against the backdrop of the magnificent Gatchina Palace. Chamber music, superb architecture and natural landscape combine in striking harmony to provide visitors to the gala concert with an unforgettable experience. 

The participants of the festival are: the Orchestra of the Mikhailovsky theatre (conductor - Mikhail Tatarnikov), the Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg (conductor - Yury Serov), the Concert chorus of the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture (the art director - Sergey Ekimov). The invited solo perfomers: Ramzi Yassa (piano, France), Kevin Short (bass-baritone, USA), Svetlana Monchak (soprano), Mila Shkirtil (mezzo-soprano). 

The programme includes four parts. The Night of Music will be opened by the Mikhailovsky theatre Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov. The musicians will perform the "Festival March" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the Piano concerto in C minor №3 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The soloist is a laureate of international competitions, professor of the École Normale de Musique de Paris "Alfred Cortot" in Paris Ramzi Yassa. The pianist has performed in many famous concert halls: in Beijing, in Berliner Philharmonie, in the Washington John Kennedy Center for the performing arts, the Wiener Musicferein etc. In Night of Music Ramzy Yassa will take part for the first time. 

The second part of the programme will include the Suite of "Carmen" opera by Georges Bizet and "Bolero" by Moris Ravel. 

The festival will be continiued with the performance of the Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg (conductor - Yury Serov). The musicians will continiue the show and present the concert version of opera "Porgy and Bess" by George Gershwin. The role of Porgy will be performed by the American singer Kevin Short. His repertoire comprises the masterpieces from Monteverdi and Mozart to Verdi and Wagner. The famous bas-bariton sings the leading roles in opera performances all around the world. The list of the orchestras he works with, is really extensive: he gives concerts in USA, Europe, Japan.
The role of Bess will be performed by Svetlana Monchak - the solo singer of the Mikhailovsky theatre, the participant of the festivals "Golden Mask", "Sweet Cherry Forest", "St. Petersburg Palaces" etc. 

The final part of the Night of Music will include the premiere play of the composer L. Rezetdinov that was made specially for the Festival. It presents itself the potpourri of the Soviet songs performed with an orchestra. It is called "Melodies of the Country of Soviets". The solo singer is Mila Shkirtil. 

The festival is being organized under the auspices of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum.
