Description

2016 is marked by the 125th anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev. The Prokofiev year is extremely important not only for musicians, but also for the ballet. «Romeo and Juliet» and «Cinderella» are just as famous and appreciated as works as the ballet classics of the 19th century. Prokofiev’s ballet heritage is not limited to these two. The composer conducted very interesting experiments in Dyaghilev’s «Russian ballet»; «The Prodigal Son» is undoubtedly the most interesting of those. There were various classical and modernist choreographers’ performances on Prokofiev's music, which was not written specifically for ballet. That is where Prokofiev’s «Stone Flower» came to life – a ballet by Yuri Grigorovich, which started a new era of St. Petersburg and Leningrad-total national ballet, which started the career of the outstanding choreographer of the twentieth century. The Forum is organized on the threshold of Grigorovich’s anniversary, which is in the beginning of January 2017.

Also Yuri Nikolaevich himself is preparing the premiere of the renewed «Stone Flower» at the Mariinsky theater. The «Prokofiev on the ballet stage» conference is dedicated to all three of the mentioned cultural events and will consist of:

-          Theoretical part with famous Russian and foreign researchers of Prokofiev’s art;

-          Sessions with experts of the musical theater, where Valery Gergiev, Yuri Grigorovich, Nikolay Tsiskaridze and other legends of the Russian ballet will share their experience in terms of Prokofiev’s music.

A rehearsal of the «Stone Flower» premiere is scheduled after the conference.
